How to delete junk file in your computer

Deleting junk files from your computer is a good way to free up space and improve performance. Junk files can include temporary files, system logs, cached files, and other unnecessary data that accumulate over time. Here's how you can delete junk files on a Windows computer:

1. Use Disk Cleanup Utility (Windows)

Steps:

  1. Open Disk Cleanup:

    • Press Win + S to open the search bar, type "Disk Cleanup", and select it from the search results.
  2. Select the Drive:

    • When Disk Cleanup opens, it will ask you to select the drive you want to clean. Choose the system drive (usually C:) and click OK.
  3. Scan for Junk Files:

    • Disk Cleanup will take a few moments to scan the drive for junk files.
  4. Select Files to Delete:

    • Once the scan is complete, you'll see a list of file types you can delete, such as:
      • Temporary files
      • System error memory dump files
      • Temporary Internet files
      • Recycle Bin
      • Windows Update Cleanup (if applicable)
    • Check the boxes next to the file types you want to delete.
  5. Clean Up:

    • After selecting the files, click OK, then click Delete Files to confirm.

2. Use Storage Sense (Windows 10/11)

Windows 10 and 11 have a built-in tool called Storage Sense to help automatically remove junk files.

Steps:

  1. Open Settings:

    • Press Win + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Storage:

    • In the Settings window, select System, then go to Storage.
  3. Turn On Storage Sense:

    • Under Storage, toggle the Storage Sense switch to "On" to automatically delete temporary files, files in the Recycle Bin, and other unused files.
  4. Configure Storage Sense:

    • Click on Configure Storage Sense or run it now to customize how often it runs and which files it deletes (e.g., files older than 30 days, temporary files, etc.).

3. Manually Delete Temporary Files

You can also manually delete temporary files that might not be captured by Disk Cleanup.

Steps:

  1. Open the Run Dialog:

    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter Temp Folder Location:

    • Type %temp% and press Enter. This opens the Temp folder where many temporary files are stored.
    • Select all files in this folder by pressing Ctrl + A, then press Delete. If some files can't be deleted, skip them.
  3. Delete System Temporary Files:

    • Open the Run dialog again (Win + R) and type temp, then press Enter.
    • Select and delete the files in this folder as well.
  4. Delete Windows Temp Files:

    • Open the Run dialog again, type prefetch, and press Enter.
    • Select and delete the files in this folder as well.

4. Clear Browser Cache

Browsers store cached files to speed up browsing, but over time these files can build up and take up space.

Steps:

  1. Clear Cache in Chrome:

    • Open Chrome, click the three dots (menu) in the top-right corner, and go to More tools > Clear browsing data.
    • In the pop-up window, select Cached images and files, and click Clear data.
  2. Clear Cache in Edge:

    • Open Edge, click the three dots in the top-right corner, and go to Settings > Privacy, search, and services.
    • Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear, select Cached images and files, and click Clear now.
  3. Clear Cache in Firefox:

    • Open Firefox, click the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner, and go to Settings > Privacy & Security.
    • Under Cookies and Site Data, click Clear Data, and select Cached Web Content.

5. Use Third-Party Cleanup Tools

If you want a more thorough cleanup, you can use third-party tools such as:

  • CCleaner: A popular tool that removes junk files, cleans up the registry, and more.
  • BleachBit: A free, open-source alternative for cleaning up your computer.

Steps with CCleaner:

  1. Download and Install CCleaner from the official website.
  2. Run the Cleaner: Open CCleaner, and click Analyze to see which files can be cleaned up.
  3. Clean: Click Run Cleaner to remove the junk files.

6. Uninstall Unnecessary Programs

Sometimes, junk files are tied to unnecessary programs that you don't use anymore. Uninstalling them can free up space.

Steps:

  1. Open Control Panel:

    • Press Win + X and select Control Panel.
  2. Go to Programs:

    • Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Uninstall Unnecessary Programs:

    • Browse through the list of installed programs, right-click on the ones you no longer need, and choose Uninstall.

Additional Tips:

  • Empty the Recycle Bin regularly to free up space.
  • Check for large files: Use a tool like WinDirStat or TreeSize to identify large files or folders taking up space.

By following these steps, you can efficiently remove junk files and free up storage space on your computer.
